Here are the things I have published in on form or another so far.
My Ph.D. Thesis.
Developing philosophically my core conviction that reality and ethical goodness
are inseparable pursuits that can only be found when science, art and religion work
in conjunction.
Relevant to recent developments, argues that Anglicanism, like a three-legged stool,
collapses when one 'leg' of the Anglican triad - scripture, reason and tradition
- is removed. We need to see each of the three in the light of the other two,
rather than as independent sources of faith. Clearly written with questions for
discussion, suitable for parish discussion groups - but perhaps it is now too late?
For students and others, presenting the sacraments historically and in terms of
a sacramental vision for life.
Written with my old colleague from Cardiff days,
Gareth Williams, the
SCM Studyguide to Christian Spirituality is designed as a lucid and comprehensive
introduction to spirituality for students of all religious backgrounds, especially
those coming to the subject for the first time. Part One looks at the Christian
spiritual tradition through an encyclopaedic study of a variety of spiritual writers.
These are treated chronologically: the Bible, the patristic period, the time when
monasticism triumphed, the Middle Ages, the Reformation, and the post-Enlightenment
period. Part Two, which could also be used at a more advanced level, explores Christian
spirituality through a range of interdisciplinary themes. Successive chapters look
at its relation to personal experience, science, theology, psychology, sexual embodiment,
and ethics. The final chapter raises urgent contemporary issues: the relation of
Christian spirituality to that of other faiths, and to ‘postmodern’ culture in general.
Each chapter concludes with questions for discussion and select further reading,
and an extensive bibliography for each chapter is also provided.

By my wife, Judith Thompson, co authored with Professor Stephen Pattison and myself,
a learner's guide to the art of relating faith to life. (Are we not all
learners in this sense?)

With Preface by Canon Melvyn Matthews
We are used to making Lent a special time for spiritual renewal, and there
is an immense amount of material available to help us, but much less has been written
on the other seasons of the year which can also be a vital way of aligning the whole
of our lives, with our varied experiences and moods, with the life of Christ in
its many aspects.
This resource explores the traditions that have shaped each season, the lectionary
readings, and the liturgies observed across the ecumenical spectrum. It aims to
unlock the great potential of the seasons, both for those who plan and lead worship,
and for those who use it as a resource for their own and others’ spiritual growth.
It draws out the distinctive spiritual ‘mood’ of each season and relates it to stages
or phases of our own human journey.
