Transfiguration

Luke 9.28-36

Celebrated on August 6th
Ref

One's own voice is one voice no-one rightly
loves, but when another calls
our name, we shine.
So Christ, bleached white with crucifixion-
boding, called ‘Beloved,’ beams a dawn before
the dawn of light.
              And Moses' mountain-sinewed torah
shudders with new charges; whilst Elijah's
electric prophecy of fire (where God is
not) stills to light's small voice,
in the Beloved's cloud and shadow,
countenancing God.

Before we wheedle
our own death-fearing whine to make ourselves
a name, and after - in the nights
of splendour and days sea-dark
with brilliance - we are spoken, heard
surely. We live, the dawn
of new worlds, not yet broken.

Prayer:

He who once spoke through Symbols
to Moses on Mount Sinai
saying, ‘I am he who is’
is transfigured today on Mount Tabor before the disciples;
in his own person he shows them the nature of humankind
arrayed in the original beauty of the image of God.
Having gone up the mountain, O Christ, with your disciples,
transfigured you have made our human nature,
grown dark in Adam, to shine as lightning,
transforming it into the glory and splendour
of your own divinity….
Show us, Lord, this glory in our human weakness,
that we may shine as stars
heralding the dawning of your Kingdom.
